City of Springfield

Central Street Corridor

Springfield, MA

The Central Street Corridor Improvement project was envisioned by the City of Springfield.  Their vision consisted of a gateway roadway leading to Springfield College and the surrounding neighborhood. Benesch provided roadway reconstruction and realignment design services for the project under its On-Call Contract with the City.

The project area included a triangular area encompassing Hickory, Rifle and Central Streets. It also included two signalized and eight stop-controlled intersections. The scope of work entails the reconstruction and realignment of multiple streets within the project area. The project included the conversion of a one-way street into a two-way roadway, as well as a two-way roadway into a one-way. Benesch provided schematic and final design, survey, environmental and geotechnical engineering, traffic services, right-of-way, and bidding and construction administration.

The project was funded through a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) associated with city-wide rebuilding efforts following the June 1, 2011 Tornado.
