Heartland Expressway Corridor Development & Management Plan

Nebraska Department of Transportation | Western Nebraska

The Heartland Expressway is a key portion of the larger Great Plains International Trade Corridor that extends from Mexico to Canada. The Heartland Expressway stretches from I-70 in Colorado to I-90 in South Dakota, with approximately 200 miles of the Heartland Expressway’s 498 miles located within Nebraska’s borders.

Benesch was selected by the Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) to lead the overall Corridor Development and Management Plan (CDMP) for the portion of the Heartland Expressway located within Nebraska. The project aimed to produce a coordinated long-term plan for future improvements to the Heartland Expressway corridor in Nebraska.

The CDMP evaluated the existing highway network from Colorado to South Dakota with an extension into Wyoming. The highways included within the study area were US Highway 26, Nebraska Highway 71 and Nebraska Highway 385. The CDMP evaluated the capacity of the existing corridor and provided an analysis that included traffic projections from a four-state region. Projections considered growth along the corridor and aided in identifying a facility that best serves the region.

In addition to the corridor analysis, the study included a high-level environmental review, safety analysis and economic analysis that included a finance plan. An economic workshop was held with regional business leaders involved in the movement of goods in western Nebraska.
