A high accident rate along the I-96/M-43 interchange led the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) to move forward with reconstruction. As one of MDOT’s first and largest design-build delivery projects, this came with an aggressive, two-year project completion schedule.
Benesch led design, providing freeway, roadway and bridge design, maintenance of traffic plans, utility and drainage design, and more.
To increase capacity and boost safety, interchange improvements were made including the reconstruction of a six-lane/four-lane divided freeway, intersection reconfiguration, removal of two entrance loop ramps and additional turn lanes at the M-43/Canal Road intersection. New sidewalks also provided pedestrian access through the interchange.
