As part of a six-mile highway widening project for the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC), Benesch designed two overhead bridges with a unique green element to meet new environmental standards. With the project located near Valley Forge National Historical Park, a rain garden was incorporated as a sustainable design feature.
The infiltration rain garden was designed to control complex stormwater management and meet stringent NPDES requirements in the Exceptional Value Watershed. The rain garden collects and treats stormwater to control runoff volume, rate, temperature, sediment and pollutants. The design was so effective, the PTC adopted the rain garden concept system-wide.
