Benesch provided preliminary and final design for the widening of a 1.3 mile, two-lane, urban arterial road to four lanes through Schuylkill Haven Borough. Ten intersections, four signals, and innovative LED “No Left Turn” signs were included in the upgrade of this congested corridor. Curbs were set back and parking was removed to accommodate the widening. Benesch was able to garner stakeholder support during the design stage with extensive public outreach and municipal coordination. The Borough benefited by installing new water mains, new electric facilities, and a new stormwater system. Aesthetics also improved along the corridor, as retainer walls for many residential properties were replaced with new, decorative, modular architectural block system walls and stairs. Existing sidewalks and crosswalks were re-designed in accordance with ADA requirements to accommodate persons with disabilities to the greatest extent possible and improved overall pedestrian safety.
