Athens-Clarke County

Trail Creek Greenway Connector

Athens, GA

Athens-Clarke County sought to construct a bicycle facility, one mile in length, from the newly constructed East Athens Park to the end of existing bike route at the intersection of 1st Street and East Broad Street (North Oconee River). Benesch provided design services to help transform an old railroad right-of-way into this multi-use trail. Services included permitting, coordination with utilities (GA Power Transmission) and the University of Georgia, horizontal/ vertical design of new trail, and drainage considerations.

This project vastly improves transportation connectivity in the area, with a new 10-ft to 12-ft wide asphalt trail for bicycles and pedestrians. The project starts at East Athens Park and traverses through the transformed old railroad bed, for approximately 0.5 miles. The project sought to utilize existing facilities, such as sidewalks and trails, and develop new facilities to provide a seamless connection as needed. This project also included the construction of a new 250-foot asphalt trail which accesses the existing confederate gun emplacement site. At the intersection of 1st Street and East Broad Street (North Oconee River), the bicycle facility connects to existing bike route. Enhancements to the existing connecting facilities included new greenway signage, handicap ramps, crosswalks and parking lots.
