In recognition of over 50 years in the rail industry, Benesch’s Rick Campbell has been awarded the Hoy A. Richards Career Achievement Award, the Eastern Region Highway-Rail Grade Crossing Safety Training Conference’s highest honor. Rick serves as a Senior Technical Manager on Benesch’s specialized team dedicated to providing grade crossing engineering services to clients across the country.

“It’s an honor to be recognized by my fellow industry professionals. The work we do isn’t always easy, but it is certainly important. I’m proud to have devoted my career to improving the safety of rail grade crossings,” said Rick.

Every two years, a committee of industry professionals selects an individual to receive this prestigious award, which recognizes a career of exemplary achievement in improving the safety of rail grade crossings. As a nationally recognized expert and thought leader in grade crossing safety, Rick has been heavily involved with the conference as well as the latest trends, technologies and regulatory policies concerning at-grade crossing safety.

Nominees needed to show experience in fostering and enhancing relationships within industry and regulatory agencies, and mentoring others in grade crossing safety. Rick has spent the last 20+ years in numerous organizations, including the National Committee on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, the American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association, the Institute of Transportation Engineers and Operation Lifesaver. He has provided over 100 training seminars across the US and Canada and been instrumental in the development of standards and recommended practices for rail and traffic signal systems across the country.

Rick remains dedicated to grade crossing engineering and works closely with younger staff to ensure they acquire the skills and experience required to provide exceptional service.

“I always say the work we do today saves lives tomorrow,” said Rick. “It’s important to make sure that mission continues on.”
