On Thursday evening, February 8th, the Illinois American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC-IL) awarded the Chicago Riverwalk project their highest honor, the Eminent Conceptor Award. This annual award is given to one project for engineering achievement demonstrating a high degree of merit and ingenuity, contributing to the advancement of the private practice of engineering, and enhancing the economic and social welfare of the general public.

Fully constructed and opened to the public in the fall of 2016, the Chicago Riverwalk has been recognized by dozens of industry associations for its innovative engineering and architectural design. The $100 million project has dramatically transformed Chicago’s riverbank into an urban promenade filled with recreational amenities, economic growth potential and improved access to the river—connecting the public with one of the city’s greatest natural features. Spanning 1.25 miles along the Chicago River, the Riverwalk includes a series of piers and floating wetland gardens, a public lawn, water features and several vendor areas.

Benesch served as lead structural engineer during the project’s design and also served as construction manager.
