Experiences that Matter

Each summer, dozens of students join our nine-week internship program for the opportunity to apply what they learned in the classroom to real world projects. By joining planning, design and construction teams both in the office and out in the field, they learn not only what it takes to find project success but also how their work impacts communities.

I think my field experience at Benesch will make me a better structural designer in the long run. Some of what I learned were things I would have never thought of sitting behind a computer.

Throughout the internship, they are given the support they need to learn and grow. In addition to learning from their mangers and project team members, interns are provided with countless resources to help them grow their technical and professional skills. This combination of project work and skills training creates the ideal internship experience. But don’t just take our word for it — see what our past interns have to say.

The Summer Program

Our summer program allows you to work side-by-side with industry professionals while receiving the training and resources to develop a well-rounded set of skills.

Our summer internship curriculum was developed with your future in mind. First and foremost, you’ll join real project teams to get hands-on experience in the industry. You’ll gain valuable skills in a collaborative environment while making a difference in the communities we serve.

At the same time, you’ll be invited to attend learning sessions that will teach you the fundamentals you’ll need as you start your career. These sessions will enable you to expand your technical skills, learn how to navigate the industry, master effective communication techniques and so much more. They’ll be led by our in-house experts, giving you the opportunity to network with both Benesch leadership and other interns from across the country. You’ll also have the opportunity to learn about many of our service lines, client types and disciplines from the perspective of our technical staff.

Our program is designed to give you structured learning opportunities while providing you the freedom to apply the knowledge you’ve learned in the classroom to real world projects. Over the course of the summer you will:

  • Develop new skills by attending training sessions and completing online courses.
  • Gain project experience both in the office and out in the field.
  • Build your professional network and benefit from the mentorship of experienced staff.
  • Integrate into the company culture – join sports leagues, attend happy hours and contribute to volunteer initiatives.
  • Be encouraged to apply for Benesch’s annual intern scholarship.

Benesch offers a wide range of internships, each with their own unique qualifications and requirements. In general, the below qualifications are required:

Doug Weist Headshot

When I first interned with Benesch, I was able to help design the renovation of a park. The next summer, I was able to see the design come to life and learn the ins and outs of the project from start to finish.

I was able to work with our aviation team both in the office and out on site. Getting to see designs come to life on site was one of the best parts of my internship.

From gathering data and using ArcGIS to make maps to conducting research, creating graphics and contributing to the drafting process for large reports, I was exposed to so many different facets of working at a professional consulting firm.
