Mayor Mike Peters Pedestrian Bridge

Capital Region Development Authority | Hartford, CT

Hartford’s Adriaen’s Landing Development Project was envisioned as a redevelopment/revitalization project for downtown Hartford. Benesch provided design services for the signature Mayor Mike Peters Pedestrian Bridge, which was the final connecting element between the new Connecticut Convention Center and the rest of the mixed-use development. The new bridge carries pedestrian traffic over the Interstate 91 and Interstate 84 on-ramps, serves as an area of refuge for the nearby Connecticut Science Center and provides a connection between the new convention center and the rest of the mixed-use development.

The 268-foot bridge structure is comprised of precast, prestressed concrete beams supported on reinforced concrete piers. Substructures were located to minimize disruption to on-ramp traffic and the functioning of the science and conference centers. A prestressed, post-tensioned concrete deck was designed in order to accelerate the construction process.

Benesch also incorporated an innovative and environmentally sensitive glycol snow-melt system into the bridge deck to improve pedestrian safety. Aesthetics for the high-profile structure were maintained through the use of stamped and etched concrete, ornamental lighting, decorative fencing and flagpoles, and planters to accommodate trees along the walking surface.
