PHILLIPSBURG, KS—The Phillipsburg Municipal Airport Runway Extension project has earned the 2024 American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) – Kansas Chapter Engineering Excellence Award in the Transportation Category. This award recognizes the project’s innovative solutions to infrastructure challenges and its potential to drive long-term economic growth in the region.

Designed to extend the airport’s main runway to accommodate larger aircraft, the project addresses the evolving needs of the Phillipsburg community and surrounding areas. The extended runway allows more corporate jets to land, thereby promoting regional development, expanded business opportunities and increased employment potential.

Benesch led the project’s design and construction management, which also required conducting aeronautical and topographic surveys, geotechnical evaluations and environmental studies in compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). Additionally, the team conducted wetland delineations, endangered species assessments and socio-economic studies to balance regulatory requirements with community and environmental priorities.

Advanced technologies were integral to the project’s success. Aeronautical GIS surveys and drone technology ensured high-precision obstruction evaluations and compliance with regulatory standards. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the project team utilized virtual public engagement platforms to maintain transparent communication and effectively address stakeholder concerns.

“Successfully delivering this project required a multi-disciplinary approach and close collaboration with stakeholders,” said Brad Waller, Benesch Project Manager. “By integrating advanced technologies and engaging with stakeholders at every step, we were able to navigate complex challenges and deliver a solution that will benefit the Phillipsburg community for years to come.”

The project team overcame several complexities, including initial public resistance, the closure of a city road, land acquisition, obstruction mitigation and extensive regulatory clearances. These challenges required a balanced approach and thorough public involvement to resolve community concerns while achieving project goals.

Completed on time and within budget, the extended runway serves as a critical asset for the Phillipsburg community, facilitating growth in local industries and promoting long-term economic vitality.
