KC Streetcar Extension Grand Opening

KANSAS CITY, MO—The KC Streetcar Main Street Extension is now officially open to passengers, marking a major milestone in Kansas City’s efforts to expand sustainable, accessible transit options. The project extends the existing streetcar line 3.5 miles south from downtown to the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC), creating nearly six miles of continuous, free-fare, zero-emission service through the city’s core.

The expanded route provides an essential north–south transit link from the River Market District to UMKC, connecting many of Kansas City’s busiest neighborhoods, business districts and educational institutions. Along the way, riders benefit from 15 new stops, eight additional streetcar vehicles, improved pedestrian access and convenient connections to regional transit.

The Benesch-led team provided project management and technical support throughout the final design phase. The team conducted detailed design reviews, tracked comments and coordinated with multiple agencies and stakeholders including the City of Kansas City, Missouri, the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority and the Kansas City Streetcar Authority. Benesch also contributed to the project’s Value Engineering and Risk Assessment workshop to help optimize design value and proactively manage risks.

During construction, Benesch’s role transitioned to providing construction management and quality assurance services for the $350 million project, delivered using a Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR) method. The team performed field observations, managed project controls, reviewed schedules and pay applications, conducted quality audits, and collaborated closely with the ownership team to ensure safety, quality, and timely delivery.

Through proactive coordination and strong stakeholder collaboration, the project was completed on time and under budget—delivering a more connected, efficient and environmentally friendly transportation system for Kansas City.

City officials, project partners and community members gathered on October 24 to celebrate the grand opening of this transformative infrastructure investment. Building on the successful work of this Main Street extension, Benesch was selected to lead construction administration, testing and inspections services for the $40 million Streetcar Riverfront Extension project, which will extend the route from the City’s River Market to the Berkley Riverfront. This extension is expected to open in 2026.
