Public Projects Group Manager – Short Line and Regional Railroads

As the Public Projects Group Manager for Short Line and Regional Railroads, this role will oversee and lead public project services across the United States and North America within Benesch’s expanding Railroad Division. As a Group Manager, team building and management are also essential requirements. The successful candidate will be enthusiastic and motivated to begin assuming management responsibilities.

The ideal candidate will have at least 15 years of progressive railroad experience providing project management services and working with various local and state government agency project sponsors. This role will require managing multiple team leads, managers, and representatives on project assignments within a geographic region on behalf of the owning railroad, progressing projects through the preliminary engineering phase, into and through the construction phase, and performing project reporting and other file-related practices as needed. In addition, this role will also require timely and cost-effective coordination, reporting, and communication with the owning railroad’s managers and program leaders. The position will require travel to railroad site locations across the US and North America. Depending on location, the manager may be located in one of Benesch’s offices or work remotely. This Group Manager will work closely with the Public Projects Program Director, Division Manager, Division resources, and support staff in other office locations.

  • Manage and grow the Railroad Division Public Projects Group with Short Lines and Regional Railroads across the US and North America.
  • Manage project teams, staffing, budgets, and schedules
  • Contribute to local, regional, and corporate strategic growth initiatives
  • Develop and manage relationships with new and existing clients
  • Identify opportunities and lead strategic project pursuits
  • Represent Benesch at industry and professional engagement events

What You Will Need

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline or relevant experience required
  • Minimum of 15 years of Class I, Regional, or Short line railroad experience preferred
  • Licensed P.E. is preferred, but not required
  • Excellent communication and client relation skills
  • Strong organization and leadership skills with a track record for adhering to design budgets and schedules
  • Ability to lead, manage, mentor, and grow a dynamic team
  • Progressive experience working directly with clients and developing relationships, with proven ability to win work
  • Demonstrated ability in project identification, pursuit, and contract development
  • Strong understanding of overall project management, including a demonstrated ability to manage, monitor, and maintain project budgets and deliver projects within Benesch's financial goals and objectives
  • Proficient in Windows applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.) and other basic computer skills
