The Will County Department of Highways (DOH) had planned for many years to extend 95th Street from Plainfield-Naperville Road in Naperville, to Boughton Road in Bolingbrook over the DuPage River. The new 95th Street roadway provides a vital link for both the Naperville and Bolingbrook communities. Prior to construction of the project, the DOH worked closely with those two communities, working out the final design details that included sound walls, roadway lighting, and a multi-use path.
Benesch led the construction management of the extension of 95th Street to Kings Road. The project includes a DuPage River crossing with drilled shaft pier foundations in the river, reconstruction of two intersections and a new multi-use path with bridge underpasses.
Particularly challenging on this project was the erosion and sediment control. Close coordination and weekly updates were given directly to the Army Corps of Engineers regarding the work in and around the river. Close monitoring of the contractors’ operations and practices were necessary to ensure that no sediment-laden water was discharged outside of the project limits or into the river. This project successfully improves the connectivity of two neighborhoods while considering impacts to the surrounding environment.
