Cherry Street Bridge over Cherry Creek

City of Glendale | Glendale, CO
bridge

Benesch served as the civil/structural engineer and prime consultant for replacing the Cherry Street Bridge over Cherry Creek in Glendale, Colorado. Together with the architectural subconsultant, Benesch had two years of extensive interaction with City staff and council to discuss multiple iterations of the design theme.

Final aesthetic guidelines for this signature project included incorporating streetscape elements such as accent lighting, plazas, planters, benches, decorative walls, pilasters and railings, brick facades and waterway landscaping incorporating a hike/ bike trail that crosses under the structure. This urban project also included traffic signal design for two intersections, phased bridge construction, roadway widening and realignment, pedestrian paths and storm sewer realignments.

Coordination with Denver Parks and Traffic departments, Urban Drainage and Flood Control District (UDFCD), and the Corps of Engineers was required. Benesch was instrumental in establishing preliminary design concepts, working together with the architectural consultant and the City Council. Additional funding was solicited and acquired through the UDFCD.

For this project, Benesch utilized the design/build concept to optimize the quality of this sensitive project, accelerate the schedule and control ultimate construction costs.
