Marlatt Waterway Restoration

City of Manhattan | Manhattan, KS

The City of Manhattan retained Benesch to perform engineering design services for the Marlatt Waterway, from Tuttle Creek Boulevard to Casement Avenue. Marlatt Waterway is in a rapidly developing area of Manhattan. The project goals were to create a waterway cross section that could handle a 100-year storm event and minimize the need for ongoing City maintenance.

Services included survey, hydraulic analysis, bioretention design and technical report development. Benesch’s design included approaches to improving aesthetics and overall water quality with elements that mimic nature within the project’s space constraints. These natural elements included rock vanes, weirs, and native vegetation suited to the wet environment and the Kansas climate. The completed project also addresses educational/interpretive opportunities through a partnership with Kansas State University.
