Benesch Named 2023 Employer of the Year by WTS – Pittsburgh Chapter
PITTSURGH, PA – The Pittsburgh Chapter of the Women’s Transportation Seminar (WTS) has recognized Benesch as Employer of the Year for 2023. The award is given to companies that reflect and support WTS’s mission of connecting and advancing women to strengthen the transportation industry.
Benesch is a strong partner of WTS at the local level and sponsors chapters in Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Boston, Chicago, Northeast Florida and the North Carolina Triangle. Benesch employees have contributed 40 years of combined activity to WTS initiatives across the country, supporting the organization at all levels by promoting and facilitating participation in events that contribute value to the transportation industry.
Benesch Technical Manager Amelia Harris, PhD, PE, is the current Treasurer for the Pittsburgh Chapter, where she manages and directs the chapter’s financial operations. Amelia also works with and supports the chapter’s Event Planning, Student Outreach, Scholarship and TransportationYOU committees, while also playing a role on the chapter’s officer leadership team.
“I’m really passionate about creating opportunities for women at all stages of their careers—from students to seasoned professionals,” said Amelia. “That’s why I love being part of WTS. The organization provides valuable leadership development and so much more. It’s something that is very personal to me, as I have certainly benefited from networking with and being guided by other women in the industry.”
Benesch is committed to providing equitable access to career development and growth opportunities, as well as celebrating the contributions of women at every level within the organization.
The firm offers tailored mentorship programs, leadership training, recognition programs and flexible work arrangements to ensure that women have every opportunity to thrive in their professional careers. In 2021, Benesch formed an employee-led resource group (ERG), Women of Benesch, that aims to support professional growth through women-focused training and mentorship for its 133 members across the country.
In 2023, Benesch employed 33 women via their internship program, making up 38.8% of the total intern class that year. In addition, the company has seen a 125.6% increase in the number of women employed across the country over the last four years.
“It’s an honor to receive this recognition from WTS, not just for our company but for the many women who work here and make a difference every day.” said Benesch’s North Regional Manager Elizabeth Gallagher, PE, SE. “I first got involved in WTS during my first month of work nearly three decades ago when I attended a local chapter meeting. I continue to encourage the women of our company to do the same!”
The 2023 Employer of the Year award was presented during the organization’s Annual Recognition Awards Banquet on November 9 at PNC Park’s Left Field Lounge.
