For over a decade, Benesch has been performing bridge inspections throughout Massachusetts and is also under several consecutive complex bridge inspection contracts for The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) as a subconsultant to the prime consultant.

Bridge inspections are being performed in accordance with the Federal Highway Administration, the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, and MassDOT requirements. Several of the bridges inspected under these contracts were complex, movable bridges.

Benesch has recently inspected the following structures:

  • Cambridge Street over I-90/MBTA/CSX
  • Bridge Street over the Merrimack River
  • Morrissey Boulevard over Dorchester Bay
  • I-91 over West Columbus Avenue/Amtrak/CSX/Pan Am/Parking Garage
  • I-495 Upper Level over I-495 Lower Level/Merrimack River
  • ST28/McGrath Highway over MBTA/Keolis
  • US6 over the Acushnet River.

Specialized access equipment was utilized on many bridges. This included under-bridge snoopers, off-road aerial lifts, bucket trucks, hi-rail, boats with aerial lifts, pipe staging and floats.

Benesch coordinated with traffic control, access equipment vendors, various railroad agencies, and local and state police. Inspections were performed during the night for traffic control during off-peak hours. Routine, special member, freeze/thaw and fracture critical inspections were performed.
