Geneva Road over DuPage River Bridge Replacement

The DuPage County Division of Transportation selected Benesch to provide construction management services for the replacement of the Geneva Road Bridge over the West Branch of the DuPage River. The project replaced an aging bridge with a new 72-foot single-span steel beam structure designed to improve safety, enhance regional hydraulics and support multimodal transportation.

The new bridge eliminated the existing in-stream pier, improving hydraulic performance while raising Geneva Road approximately five feet to meet the new bridge profile. The completed project provides two travel lanes in each direction, a sidewalk on the south side of the bridge and a new multi-use path on the north side. The project also included roadway reconstruction, drainage improvements, compensatory storage, and erosion and sediment control measures.

Benesch managed the complex construction effort through close coordination with the owner, contractors, utility companies and regulatory agencies. The project team developed a two-stage traffic control plan to minimize disruptions and maintain public access throughout construction while overseeing quality assurance and critical construction activities.

The team also developed innovative solutions to resolve utility conflicts, including temporary drainage modifications and the relocation of telecommunications infrastructure to avoid impacts to bridge foundation construction. To support project delivery and environmental compliance, Benesch used drone technology to document compensatory storage areas and completed pavement, providing detailed topographic data to verify hydraulic requirements and permitting obligations were met.

Through proactive coordination and innovative construction management practices, Benesch helped deliver a bridge that improves safety, enhances mobility and supports the long-term transportation needs of the DuPage County community.
