Lincoln Airport Celebrates Progress on Runway 18/36 Reconstruction
LINCOLN, NE—Earlier this month, Benesch team members joined representatives from the Lincoln Airport Authority, Nebraska Air National Guard and federal, state and local partners to celebrate progress on the reconstruction of Runway 18/36 at Lincoln Airport. As the airport’s largest-ever airfield development initiative, the $100 million investment will modernize a key aviation asset that supports commercial air service, general aviation, military operations and emergency response activities.
The airport’s 12,901-foot primary runway has been constructed, rehabilitated and maintained over several decades, with some pavement sections dating back more than 70 years. As the pavement aged, maintenance needs became increasingly extensive, prompting a comprehensive reconstruction effort to replace the runway and bring the facility up to current standards.
Benesch is providing full consulting services for the project, which includes reconstruction of the primary runway, connecting taxiway improvements, upgraded LED airfield lighting and signage, installation of a Runway Weather Information System, drainage enhancements and upgrades to multiple FAA navigational aids.
Benesch provided geotechnical investigation, preliminary design, final design and bidding services and will continue supporting the project through construction observation, materials testing and project closeout services.
Construction is being completed in phases and is expected to continue through 2027. Once complete, the project will enhance the safety, reliability and long-term performance of one of the region’s most important aviation facilities.
