Newly Open Milwaukee Intermodal Station Concourse Offers Modern Passenger Amenities

MILWAUKEE, WI—After nearly a decade of planning and design, the long-awaited and newly rehabilitated Milwaukee Intermodal Station concourse is now open, providing much-needed access and amenities to passengers. Originally built in 1965, this $22 million project transformed a dark, dated and deteriorated concourse into a bright, modern and ADA-compliant hub for travelers. The new, 400-foot-long facility serves five tracks and three platforms. It accommodates 600,000 passengers annually, including Amtrak, freight rail traffic, and future commuter rail service.

A grand opening ceremony held on June 22nd showcased the facility’s many new features and improvements, including: extensive ADA/accessibility upgrades, such as the addition of escalators, elevators, and an innovative hearing loop; LED lighting that complements large natural skylights; pedestrian kiosks providing a live information stream; and much more.

Benesch contributed to the planning and design of the project, including value planning to determine the best design options; design project management; structural design; and track and drainage design.
