Geneva Road over West Branch River Earns CMAA Award

DUPAGE COUNTY, IL – The Geneva Road Over West Branch River project has earned a Project Achievement Award (infrastructure less than $25 million) from the Construction Management Association of America (CMAA) Chicago chapter. The project was recognized for successfully taking an innovative approach to the construction management of the new 72‑foot steel‑beam bridge over the DuPage River.

This bridge replacement project was launched by the DuPage County Division of Transportation to replace an aging bridge, improve safety and mobility, and enhance regional hydraulics. The new 72-foot single-span bridge eliminates the in-stream pier, raises Geneva Road by five feet, and adds a sidewalk and bike path to support multimodal access while meeting modern standards and environmental requirements.

By blending technological innovation with exceptional coordination across multiple stakeholders into the construction management approach, Benesch worked to minimize environmental disturbance and seamlessly integrate complex utility demands. Benesch deployed drone technology to accurately document compensatory storage areas and completed pavement, capturing detailed topographic imagery to confirm storage volumes met all permitting and hydraulic requirements.

Utility coordination presented significant challenges throughout the project, but the team responded with creative solutions, including temporarily re-routing Stage 1 drainage to eliminate a pre-stage installation conflict and convincing a telecommunications company to relocate their line aerially onto proposed ComEd poles rather than boring through the roadway center, which would have conflicted with pile installation.

The project was honored at the CMAA Chicago 2026 Project Awards on May 14th with several project team members in attendance to accept the award.
