QUAD CITIES, IA — The first in a pair of new bridges connecting Illinois and Iowa along I-74 is now carrying traffic. This basket-handle true-arch bridge is the first of its kind over the Mississippi and is set to help bring much needed congestion relief to the ever-expanding Quad Cities. Since 2009, Benesch has played a substantial role in the overall I-74 corridor improvement—a $1.2 billion endeavor that is the Iowa DOT’s largest transportation project to date. In addition to designing the approach spans and leading the substructure and foundation design of the main span for the crossing, Benesch led design plans for the north and central sections of the new corridor and served as the Corridor-Wide Coordinator on behalf of this joint project between the Iowa and Illinois DOTs.
