IL 89 over the Illinois River Featured in Roads & Bridges Magazine
PUTNAM/BUREAU COUNTIES, IL – Designing a replacement for IL 89 over the Illinois River was no small feat. The flood-prone navigable waterway runs along a nearby former coal mine, where poor soil conditions compounded the design challenges faced by engineers. The July/August issue of Roads & Bridges Magazine highlights the innovative design for this replacement structure which saved $7 million during construction.
Benesch led both the preliminary and final design efforts for this historic structure replacement. The new 1,776-foot-long bridge consists of nine spans and was built on an offset alignment.
