Utility Design at the Damen, Elston, Fullerton Intersection

The intersection of Damen, Elston and Fullerton is one of the most heavily congested, accident-prone intersections in the City of Chicago. In addition to the reconstruction of 1.3 miles of roadway, including an intersection re-route, 1,200 LF of new 16-inch watermain and 1,700 LF of new 12-inch watermain were designed for the reconfigured leg of the intersection on Elston Avenue. It also included 1,600 LF of combined sewers and 1,100 feet of storm sewer separation/re-route.
Utility coordination was particularly complex, given the urban setting. Extensive coordination was required with gas, telecommunications and electric utility companies to ensure all utility crossings were identified and accommodated during this project.
The intersection re-route allows the City to construct new off-line sewers and eliminates the need to remove the existing junction chamber on Fullerton Avenue, which would have required a costly, three-year construction period.
