OMAHA, NE — Benesch Project Manager Erica “Sunny” Mullen was recognized as the 2022 Young Professional of the Year by the American Council of Engineering Companies Nebraska at their annual gala on April 28. The Young Professional of the Year Award strives to promote the accomplishments of young engineers under the age of 35 by highlighting their engineering contributions and the resulting impact on society.

In addition to her involvement with ACEC Nebraska, Mullen is active in the National Society of Professional Engineers, Society of Women Engineers and the American Society of Civil Engineers. Mullen currently serves on the executive board for the American Public Works Association (APWA) Nebraska Chapter. As a volunteer with the Future City project-based learning program, Mullen provides engineering knowledge and guidance to middle-school students designing cities of the future. She currently serves as a Region Coordinator where she guides the steering committees in planning and organizing the program.

Mullen started at Benesch as a summer student intern in 2010 and later rejoined full time in 2019 as a project manager on the civil team in Omaha, NE. Her skills include the design of transportation and water/wastewater systems, hydrologic & hydraulic analysis, Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) compliance, construction materials testing and grant application preparation.
