The primary runway at Phillipsburg Municipal Airport, Runway 13/31, required an extension to better accommodate larger aircraft and meet the evolving needs of the airport. By extending the runway by approximately 600 feet, the project expands access for modern aircraft and creates new opportunities for regional connectivity and long-term economic growth.

In addition to extending the runway, the project included 36,000 square feet of new pavement, additional lighting and associated infrastructure improvements. Benesch led the design and construction management, performing aeronautical and topographic surveys, geotechnical evaluations and environmental studies.

The project required a comprehensive Environmental Assessment in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), including wetland delineations, endangered species assessments and socio-economic analyses to balance regulatory requirements with community and environmental priorities.

The project presented several complexities, including land acquisition, obstruction mitigation and regulatory coordination. To address these challenges, the team incorporated advanced technologies such as aeronautical GIS surveys and drone-based evaluations to ensure precision and compliance with regulatory standards.

Public engagement was also a key component of the project. With COVID-19 restrictions in place, the team utilized virtual platforms to maintain transparent communication and gather stakeholder input throughout design and construction.

Completed on time and within budget, the runway extension provides Phillipsburg with a critical infrastructure improvement that enhances airport capabilities and supports long-term economic development.
