The surface of the concrete and asphalt apron at Forbes Field was deteriorating badly due to the age of the pavement, creating a hazard to aircraft. The Kansas Adjutant General’s Department selected Benesch to design a new apron ramp to mitigate the issue. In total, the reconstruction project consisted of rehabilitating 60,000 square yards of apron pavement and two hangars.

Benesch completed design, bidding, and construction administration services to repair the pavement and associated hangars. The repair work involved variable depth milling of the existing pavement with a new one-inch asphalt leveling course and six-inch concrete pavement.

Also included in the project’s design was 1,500 linear feet of new storm sewer, as well as sidewalks and parking areas around all three hangars adjacent to the apron.
