Benesch worked with the Appalachian State University Athletic Department to develop a new varsity baseball field for Division One NCAA play. The project included the development of a 400-foot synthetic surface playing field with enclosed dugouts and seating for 800 spectators.

The surface of the baseball field, including the infield, is 100% synthetic turf. The field has an invisible backstop system. Support facilities included a field house with locker rooms, team rooms, coaches’ offices, public restrooms, and concession areas. Amenities included a gated entryway, pedestrian plaza and landscaping.

An aggressive construction schedule during the winter months in Boone presented the design team with a number of challenges. Benesch worked with the university to creatively phase the project to meet the schedule and minimize disruptions to the baseball team.

Professional services included construction documents, bidding, and construction administration. An architectural subconsultant designed the press box, restroom, concession, covered dugouts, and fieldhouse. An electrical engineering subconsultant designed the sports field lighting system.
