Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools

Garinger Stadium

Charlotte, NC

The original stadium and grandstands at Garinger High School were opened for students with the school in 1959. Over time, additional support facilities were added. The facilities were in poor condition and needed to be upgraded to meet current Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools baseline standards.

Benesch provided design work to replace the existing track and natural turf football field inside the track oval. This project included artificial turf football field, athletic field lighting and a PA system. The existing six-lane track was replaced with a new six-lane rubber latex surface track.

Project highlights

  • Replacement of a 54-year old football field and track
  • Design and construction sequenced to minimize disruptions to school operations and schedules
  • New lighting system had to be carefully designed around existing bleachers to remain
  • A variance was required to locate improvements back in the same place as a result of zoning ordinance changes since the original facilities were constructed
