Communities are increasingly turning to Green Infrastructure (GI) strategies to provide environmental, economic and social benefits. For several years, the City of Lee’s Summit has partnered with Benesch to develop GI solutions for challenges its community faces. These solutions improved stormwater quality while reducing stormwater runoff. They also positively impacted energy consumption and improved air quality, carbon reduction and aesthetics.

Benesch developed stormwater solutions integrating aspects of both traditional and natural designs. Benesch was able to alleviate several flooding issues for the city. These projects included bio-swales and rain gardens within city parks as well as bio-detention and rain gardens in highly visible commercial areas.

Natural materials were selected and used not only to be highly functional but also visually appealing. The bio-swale and rain gardens at each location provide a neighborhood amenity and create wildlife habitat. These GI designs, as well as others, provide Lee’s Summit with the flexibility to adapt existing infrastructure to meet evolving needs while promoting social value and community pride.
