South Coddington & West Van Dorn Intersection

City of Lincoln | Lincoln, NE
roundabout

This location experienced numerous right-angle crashes and was identified as a priority, high-crash location in the City of Lincoln for several years. As part of this safety project, an alternative analysis study was completed to identify the best geometric or traffic control measure to improve overall safety at the intersection.

The alternative Benesch recommended to improve safety was a single-lane roundabout to reduce the number of conflict points at the intersection and eliminate severe, right-angle crashes. As part of the design, existing asphalt was removed and replaced with concrete pavement to tie into recent South Coddington Avenue improvements located north of West Van Dorn Street.

The project included a new sidewalk on all four quadrants of the intersection. Additionally, existing stormwater facilities were removed and reconstructed to maintain proper drainage.

Benesch also provided roadway, traffic, roundabout and drainage design, NEPA environmental services, public involvement, geotechnical investigation and construction oversight. Unique considerations existed in regard to construction phasing and utility coordination. Access to nearby businesses and residences and connections to Pioneers Park and Golf Course was maintained throughout the construction.
