Robinson Avenue (SR 223) Widening

Robinson Avenue serves as a critical urban principal arterial, providing access in eastern Georgia through the City of Grovetown to Gate 2 of Fort Gordon, a United States Army Installation. The addition of the new cyber command and intelligence command centers at Fort Gordon brought in 15,000 people to the area, with a traffic impact to over 9,000 vehicles per day, one-way in the morning and evening commuting hours. To accommodate this growth, significant improvements to Robinson Avenue were required for congestion relief, safety and mobility concerns.

In response, this Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) project widened approximately 1.8 miles of the existing two-lane road to a three-lane road with bike lanes, curb and gutters, and sidewalks. Project elements include a new signalized intersection, a new storm sewer system, utility coordination and railroad coordination.

This project was GDOT’s first Transportation Investment Act (TIA) project administered in the state of Georgia. In addition to serving as lead designer, Benesch played a key role in helping to develop the requirements for the TIA Program.
