Route 187 serves residential and recreational areas from the Agawam town line to Route 20 in Westfield. Benesch designed improvements to the roadway to correct deficiencies due to poor drainage.
Benesch’s “Complete Streets” design services for this 2.5 mile reconstruction project encompassed minor widening, horizontal and vertical realignment, stormwater design, water quality BMPs, and wetlands mitigation. The project also included sidewalk installation and signalization at two major intersections. Design services for cross culvert replacements, environmental permitting, and right-of-way and layout plan preparation were also provided.
The project was completed in three phases:
- Phase I: Feeding Hills Road from the Agawam Town Line to Old Feeding Hills Road
- Phase II: Little River Road from Route 20 in Westfield to Sherman’s Mill Bridge, including the Shaker Road signalized intersection
- Phase III: Sherman Mills Bridge Replacement – Route 187 over Great Brook
Several public outreach meetings were held to discuss the project and its impact on the community.
