SR 222 – Trexlertown Bypass

Route 222 is a 5.5-mile state highway in western Lehigh County near Allentown, PA. Capacity issues began to occur in this area, as Hamilton Boulevard served as the only major route connecting Lehigh Valley to Berks County. A need for a bypass became apparent to alleviate congestion on Hamilton Boulevard and provide a safe and efficient travel route.

Benesch designed the Section 002 bypass segment between Route 100 and Hamilton Boulevard near the Interstate 78 interchange. This portion of the project consists of a 3.75-mile, four-lane arterial highway on a new alignment and the design of 12 structures. As part of the bypass, Benesch designed new interchanges at SR 100 and Brookside Road as well as intersection improvements at SR 222 and Kressler Road, Cetronia Road and Grange Road. New intersections were constructed where Mill Creek Road and Krocks Road intersect with Hamilton Boulevard.

Benesch also provided alternative alignment studies, an area-wide traffic study, traffic signal design, environmental mitigation design, public coordination, preparation of right-of-way plans, and preparation of construction plans and specifications and stormwater management for this new highway.

Completion of the Route 222 Trexlertown Bypass helped alleviate congestion, reduce travel time, improve safety for the local business traffic, and provided an important link to Berks County.
