Loyola University CTA Intersection & Pedestrian Plaza

The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) Red Line stop on Sheridan Road at the Loyola University campus accommodates more than 4,000 pedestrians and high volumes of vehicular and bus traffic every day. This project aimed to successfully alleviate congestion while improving safety with both aesthetics and sustainability in mind.

Benesch performed planning and engineering studies, landscape plaza design and final contract plans within a three-month timeframe. Construction engineering tasks included traffic signal modernization, improved crosswalks and ADA-compliant sidewalk ramps.

In addition, the design of the new pedestrian plaza incorporated “Complete Streets” design concepts to improve interaction between vehicles, bicyclists, pedestrians and transit commuters. Decorative sidewalk planters with irrigation and ornamental lighting along Sheridan Road were included in the sustainable design and installed. The sidewalk planters were incorporated to act as a natural pedestrian guide, encouraging the use of crosswalks as opposed to crossing Sheridan Road mid-block.

The transformed intersection and surrounding areas now enjoy less congestion and a safer traveling environment for all users.
