Cicero Avenue Station

Metra | Chicago, IL
train station

The area surrounding Metra’s Cicero Avenue Station in the City of Chicago was in the middle of a revitalization. Improvements to commuter access and operations were integral to the overall redevelopment effort.

Benesch prepared and designed plans for the construction of the new station, which included approximately 1,500 linear feet of retaining walls, a new railroad overpass, two passenger platforms, four station structures, four station access staircases and two elevators.

Construction was extremely complex, as the new structure required working in and around four live tracks. In addition, a new bridge across Cicero Avenue was created to allow the separation of freight and commuter train operations. Metra was unable to reduce the number of trains during construction, so performing work without disrupting the flow of traffic to passenger and freight trains was critical.

The new station enabled direct passenger access to the Cicero Avenue and Grand Avenue bus lines and included significant ADA upgrades and safe access on both sides of the street. It also allowed for increased train speed following the determination that only one station was needed instead of two smaller, separate stations on each side of the road.
