Smalley Elementary School
The newly renovated Smalley Elementary School in New Britain, Connecticut, is designed to accommodate a peak enrollment of 670 K-5 students, while providing additional parking and site amenities for the students. Benesch, working in association with architect, Kaestle Boos Associates, Inc., provided survey, traffic, and site/civil engineering services for the project.
Located in an urban, residential neighborhood, the design consisted of site improvements for the full renovation of the 80,000-square-foot existing facility and a 25,000-square-foot addition. Along with traditional classroom spaces, the new school features: two playgrounds, a full-sized gymnasium, a cafetorium (cafeteria/auditorium), new parking, and separated bus/parent drop-off areas.
Benesch developed the site grading and drainage plan for the renovated school and the parking areas. Engineering services also included utility design, erosion and sedimentation controls, surveying, and traffic engineering.
